Visit Historic Buildings and Sites

Barnweil Church is 300 metres walk uphill behind Heughmill. Now a ruin, this is where John Knox used to preach.

The Wallace Monument is another 300 metres walk up the hill - erected to commemorate Sir William Wallace, the scourge of the English. The inscriptions will make a Sassenach's blood boil.

Symington Church - is 2 miles down the road. A Norman church built in 1160, the church is still actively supported, being the oldest church in Scotland in continuing use.

Dundonald Castle is another mile further on. One of Robert the Bruce's fortified keeps dating back to the 14th century, it has recently been renovated.

Culzean Castle is south of Ayr. A magnificent Adams masterpiece set in a National Country Park. At one time President Eisenhower had an apartment in the castle.

Burns Country

Ayrshire is the home of Robert Burns (1759-1796). Visit the Burns Cottage and Museum in Alloway, by Ayr, and the Brig o'Doon which was the setting for Tam O'Shanter. The Bachelor Club in Tarbolton was where Burns learnt to dance and where he founded a debating society. The Poosie Nancies Inn in Mauchline was one of his favourite watering holes.

Take the ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick on the Isle of Arran. Visit Brodick Castle and its world famous gardens. The more active can climb Goat Fell (red deer abound).

Alternatively, take the scenic route up the coast to Largs and the boat to Cumbrae. Hire bicycles and cycle round the island
